You wouldn’t call it weird, because in some ways it was petty. You can’t call it a flop either. Despite the fact that he was slain in the media for being Borders cannot be played when launchedthe game It has sold over 20 million units and grossed over $600 million in revenue.
So what is Cyberpunk 2077? A game drowning in its own hype? Kinda. An Icarus-like morality tale about biting off more than you can chew? maybe. Regardless, if you’re connected to video game culture, you likely have an opinion about Cyberpunk 2077. It was a game that completely developed its reputation in the months and years after its release.

All of this would say if you told me, in 2020, that my favorite TV show of 2022 would be an anime based on this video game, I wouldn’t be laughing in your face. I would walk back cautiously, like Homer Simpson withdrawing into the bushes. I’d call you an idiot. Witch, even. I was going to ask you to burn at the stake.
But this is my truth. You’ve watched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. I’ve seen the light. And if you have any good sense you will follow in my footsteps. This offer is incredible. I firmly believe more people should watch it and talk about it.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a unique standalone anime set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. A heart-wrenching story about the long-term effects of violence and trauma. A thoughtful examination of the power structures that force subsets of the young and poor into lives of crime. It’s the end result of a bizarre global collaboration between Polish game creators, CD Projekt Red, and Japanese animation studio Trigger Inc.
Much like the video game it’s based on, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is full of environmental details. Fans of the game will likely recognize the areas they have explored by default. The showrunners literally asked CD Projekt Red for a copy of the game that they could explore freely for in-game reference photos. Much of the environment art on show is Studio Trigger’s version of the video game’s vast and intense world.
The episodes are short, but very intense.

But while the show zeroes in on CD Projekt Red’s world-building universe, Edgerunners focuses on its own little story within that space. Its central characters are well written, but the visual designs themselves are the standout. It’s clear that an incredible amount of thought went into the look and feel of everyone on this show, from the main cast all the way to the occasional onlooker.
It is driven by a sophisticated soundtrack that sets the tone perfectly. To this day, I can’t listen to Rosa Walton’s “I Really Wanna Stay At Your House” without shedding a few tears.
Studio Trigger, the people behind Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, has a legendary reputation. Animation studio founder Hiroyuki Imaishi burst onto the scene with the stunning (and disjointed) Gurren Lagann back in 2007. Recently, you may have seen Little Witch Academia or the studio’s work on the animated series Star Wars: Visions.
They all have unique aesthetics. Hyperviolence, an almost pathological obsession with vibrant, fluid movement escalated to the ninth degree. Anime is made to its core, but Studio Trigger goes beyond the pale. Everything you produce moves at a supernatural speed.
But, if anything, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is more withdrawn compared to, say, Gurren Lagann or Kill La Kill – a demo about [checks notes] High school students who gain superpowers from their sentient high school uniform. In Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, action scenes have more breathing room. The violence, when it comes, is brutal and visceral, but feels heavier because of the frequent frenzy. It happens in a way that is not just extreme, but subversive, original, and bizarre.
Brutally beautiful and endlessly kinetic, everyone should spend some time in Cyberpunk: Edgerunner World. In general the quality was dripping – from Noted spelling of Severance to High wire tension in Andor – This was my favorite show of the year. I think I will be watching and re-watching it for years to come.
