The Best Printers, According to CNET Staffers Who Use Them

While 2023 seems like the distant future, full of apps and digital files, we still need hard copies sometimes. Photos need to be scanned, tickets need to be printed and posters of missing cats need to be placed on street lamps.

While we have a list that has been tested to destroy for The best printersIn addition, we’ve also compiled a list of the printers CNET employees use at home and in the office, and the reasons why they chose this particular model.

Epson

A printer is one of those things I don’t use often, and when I need to use it, I hope it works. I’ve had several printers in recent years because every time I want to use the ink dries up or something else needs repair. I was looking for a low maintenance option that had affordable ink replacements, and this is where I came across this Epson model.

It’s an all-in-one unit, so I can still scan documents to my computer when needed, but the best part is I didn’t find the ink dry yet when I wanted to use it. It also prints reliably for small to medium jobs. The ink isn’t very expensive, and you can buy an XL version of the cartridge that offers 2.5x the capacity for a little extra money. Overall, it’s a great printer if you don’t need to print a lot of pages in a short amount of time (because it’s a bit slow) but still want something that won’t make you break down when you need fresh color or black ink.

You’re getting price alerts for the Epson EcoTank ET-3750 Wireless Color All-in-One

The big selling point of the EcoTank line is that it gets rid of cartridges. Even if you only print twice a week, it’s worth the extra cost. My family prints more than that and we’re still on the original ink cartridges that came with the printer after years of use. The 3750 was replaced by the 3850 in September 2021 but they are essentially the same printer.

Since it’s the lower-end model in the line, the printer isn’t a speed devil with color prints and its class holds just 250 sheets. It doesn’t have a touchscreen, just a small screen and navigation buttons that aren’t backlit. But it has all the other features I’d expect from a compact all-in-one for a small office or home office: You get wired and wireless connections with mobile printing, an automatic document feeder, and automatic two-sided printing. Print quality is also decent. It excels on black and white documents but is fine for photos as well.

Sublimation is the process of transferring ink from paper to another material such as T-shirts, mugs, and plates. There are plenty of options if you’re looking to convert a standard printer to use sublimation ink, but if possible, you should buy a printer that’s dedicated to the job.

The Sawgrass SG500 is specifically designed for printing with sublimation ink and paper. It works great, too: You can print out a storm of artwork to put on T-shirts for the whole family. If you are interested in starting your own business using your own art, this printer is well worth the price.

I had the older, nearly identical, now discontinued version of this printer ( HL-L2340DW) for at least five years and have been solid. Unlike some other printers I own, it rarely gets disconnected from Wi-Fi so my whole family can easily print things from their various computers and phones without having to troubleshoot the connection. Printing is fast and because laser toner is not that expensive per sheet. I’m fine with black and white and the few times I need color I’ll print at my local drugstore.

The only downside is that duplexing always jams the feed, so I have to unroll it, pull out the paper, and restart the job. Sometimes the software seems to pick sided on its own and I’ve found out the hard way, but once I switch back to using unilateral (which is what we use most of the time) all is good. (Editors’ note: Avoid the HL-L2300DW version, which lacks Wi-Fi.)

HP

My wife likes to do labels with an HP Envy and CricutExplore 3. The Envy has excellent color saturation, especially on the glossy poster paper it’s used. It also has the added bonus of being a scanner, which is especially useful for scanning all of our mortgage documents as we move home.

The biggest selling point is the two-year supply of new inks. Running out of ink is the worst part of using a printer at home, but HP’s replacement service eliminates that hassle. It’s worth the money just for that.

I have to make a ridiculous amount of stickers for our son’s Tupperware, school items, folders, cooking products etc. This makes it very easy. There are different fonts, sizes, and styles to choose from.

The keyboard is dreamy and a far cry from the old-school revolving door. I also like the built-in cutting function. Gone are the days of needing scissors when you’re done.

You are receiving price alerts for the HP LaserJet M110w Printer

Full disclosure: I was the guy who proudly kept his house printer-free while using the office printer for those necessities once or twice a month. Then the pandemic came, and I found myself needing shipping labels and other documents at home. This little HP LaserJet printer fits perfectly on a bookshelf in my tiny Brooklyn apartment, and it prints reliably from PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, and smartphones, over Wi-Fi.

The 2022 model (M110w) is nearly identical to my 2020-era unit (M15w), but note: The “cheaper” M110 appears to require a subscription to HP’s cloud ink solution, so opt for the pricier model if you want to avoid a perpetual connection. Also, this laser printer is only black and white, but for me that’s a feature, not a bug.
