All eight episodes of the new Prime Video show Consulate They debuted on Friday, allowing people to fly through the entirety of the workplace epic like levels of the addictive mobile game.
The show about a workplace that gets a strange new boss stars Christoph Waltz as Regus Batoff, Nat Wolff as Craig, Brittany O’Grady as Elaine, and Amy Carrero as Patty. I binge-watched and enjoyed the dark comedy series, but felt the ending kept some of the rewards out of reach.
How about Craig and Elaine’s will-or-they-or-don’t-they dynamic? Is Craig still a CompWare employee? How does Regus literally have a golden skeleton? Is he even human?
These questions can, of course, be addressed in Season 2. While we wait to see if Season 2 happens, here’s what we learned from the Season 1 finale of the new Prime Video series, which is based on the 2015 Bentley Little novel of the same name.
Creative communication no more
As a refresher, The Consultant follows Regus Patoff, a mysterious stranger who takes a job at a mobile game company called CompWare after the sudden death of its CEO, Mr. Sang. Then, young employees Craig and Elaine are faced with new demands and challenges, such as Batoff’s absurd but honest request for Elaine to release a real-life elephant in downtown Los Angeles to promote the mobile game Mr. Sang’s Jungle Odyssey.
Elaine enlists the help of her ex-boyfriend, Patrice, to do the deed for $20,000, which is the budget Batov allots for her. Then Batov gave her only half of it in advance. In the end, Patrice returns to CompWare to collect the other half.
The epilogue reveals that the elephant died after being shot with tranquilizers. Batov takes his sweet time to appear at CompWare, which is in full festive mode after the launch of Mr. Sang’s Jungle Odyssey, then tells Elaine that Patrice’s money went towards the festivities.
Elaine, played by Brittany O’Grady, took over from Patoff at Compwire.

Undeterred, Elaine reaches out to trick Patrice into waiting longer for payment, while anonymously telling him to the authorities.
When Batov showed up at CompWare, he rocked the company with heartless finishes, quick game launches and more for supposed work improvement. At the end of the finale, Elaine approaches the President’s desk, apparently indicating that she is the next CEO of CompWare.
Regus and Craig confront
If Elaine counts as the winner in this dark story, Craig is the biggest loser. Although Mr. Sang’s Jungle Odyssey wouldn’t exist without him, except that he’s completely uninterested in the final party. His fiancée, Paty, apparently left him after he lied about being ill to spend time looking for Patov. But Patov has meddled more into their relationship than Craig knows. Patty didn’t hide it—instead, she was writing a handwritten script for Patoff in the CompWare records room.
In the end, Craig finally finds out the truth after he and Ellen are able to locate Patty’s phone. It’s not Paty who has it, but Sang’s mother who has some rings gone again, and Patov gives her the phone.
Craig and Elaine hurry back to CompWare. Eileen tracks down Patty and an angry Craig confronts Patov. He grabs a large hammer used in an activity during the party and gets closer and closer to his evil boss.
Craig repeatedly strikes the glass below both of them upstairs, reminiscent of Mr. Sang’s jungle odyssey, where the glass breaks under the heavy weight of animals. Batov told Craig that his goals had been achieved, and that the costs were justified, referring to Craig as “the cost”.
Craig, who has obtained a tip from jewelry store owner Frank Florez that Batov could, somehow, contain a solid gold skeleton, appears on it as he breaks the glass. And in the end, Batov failed.
Craig does not understand the girl
Before Patov slips through the glass, breaking a couple of party tables with his fall, he tells Craig “You’re not the hero. You don’t even get the girl.” It is not immediately clear who is speaking.
It looks like Eileen (Brittany O’Grady) and Craig (Nat Wolfe) could have been more than just co-workers.

It appears that Craig’s relationship with Patty is finally coming to an end. We see her with reel bags, leaving a wrench with Craig. We also see Eileen looking through a file in the records room with Craig’s name on it.
Craig’s lies towards Patty are undoubtedly a red flag, even if they are not compatible. Patov also explains at the end that when Patty was in the recording room (and apparently in some kind of trance), she helped Patov complete his file. “She saw your weakness, your betrayal, and poured it out on every page in her own words,” says Batov. Could he have done this to ensure that Craig never infected Eileen, too? If there’s a season 2, we’ll need to see these characters come back to finish what he started.
Regus gold interior
When Regus’ fateful stumbles, one of his big toes is severed and he lands in a pile of leftover party shrimp.
It was retrieved by Craig, who froze it, boiled it, and removed the flesh to reveal a gleaming golden bone.
Therefore, Batov is literally made of gold. Is that why he has so much trouble lifting his body up and down the stairs? Does this mean that he is not human? How to be?
It was revealed in an earlier episode that the Batov’s golden skeleton was made by jewelry store owner Frank Florez, and the experiment essentially ruined Florez’s marriage. There is probably a deeper meaning here, but I could also see a character like Batov getting golden body parts at the expense of a poor man’s happiness just because that’s what he likes to do.
One thing stands out as a hint that Batov may not be human. Florez never saw Batov in person while he was forging the bones. However, he did receive checks signed by Batov. How can he sign a check without manpower?
Craig, played by Nat Wolff, learns about the golden skeleton from Frank Florez.

Regs you get results
Batov gets Mr. Sang to sign off on his accession by promising to secure Mr. Sang’s legacy. By the end, Batov had reversed the already terrible CompWare course. Sang’s mother suggests that her son is alive through Mr. Sang’s Jungle Odyssey. A nude statue version of Sang watches a bustling CompWare.
Elaine can be heard saying at the end of the episode, “All I can really tell you about Regus Patov,” “He got results.”
Just don’t think about what it takes to get there.
Batov lost his expensive toe, but that didn’t stop him from taking his services to another company, Pterodactyl Robotics. A news report eventually revealed the death of its founder, who had striven to develop the first human workforce. If Batov really is a bot, he might finally find some colleagues with whom he can communicate better.
